Where to base yourself

Frankfurt neighborhoods

Frankfurt is compact and made up of 43 districts, but as a visitor you'll spend most of your time in a handful of them. Here's a quick English guide to the areas worth knowing - and where to book depending on what you're after.

Historic core

Old Town (Altstadt)

The medieval heart around the Römerberg, the reconstructed New Old Town and the Imperial Cathedral. The most atmospheric base and walkable to almost every landmark.

Shopping & transit

Downtown (Innenstadt)

The Zeil shopping street, Hauptwache and Konstablerwache. Central, well connected and packed with department stores, cafés and the Alte Oper nearby.

Arrivals hub

Station Quarter (Bahnhofsviertel)

Around the main station - the most convenient landing spot for rail travelers, with a fast-changing mix of hotels, street food and nightlife. Livelier and edgier after dark.

Apple wine & museums

Sachsenhausen

Across the Main, home to the apple-wine taverns of Alt-Sachsenhausen and the Museumsufer (Museum Embankment). Great for evenings out and a short walk over the river.

Local & residential

Nordend

A relaxed residential quarter of old apartment blocks, cafés and small shops. Central but low-key, with an authentic everyday-Frankfurt feel.

Nightlife & dining

Bornheim

Known for the lively Berger Straße - one long ribbon of restaurants, bars and markets. A good pick if you want to eat and drink where locals do.

Riverside & modern

Ostend

The redeveloped east side around the European Central Bank and the zoo, with the Main riverbank and a growing food scene.

Student & fair-adjacent

Bockenheim

A busy, mixed quarter next to the trade-fair grounds and the old university buildings - practical and affordable, with easy fairground access.
